And unlike most residential treatment centers, Solstice takes a holistic approach to helping teen girls and assigned female at birth overcome their challenges with an emphasis on trauma-focused therapeutic techniques such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization reprocessing, and somatic experiencing.

We are located just 20 minutes outside of Salt Lake City, near the beautiful Wasatch Mountains in Utah. Teens from New Hampshire as well as across the United States are all welcome at Solstice.

The proximity of nature to our residential treatment center allows us to provide a robust outdoor program in the form of adventure therapy. Lessons on leadership, social skills, emotional regulation, and relationships are integrated into weekly off campus activities, community service, and adventure camping trips. Students can participate in a wide variety of outdoor recreation activities including, skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, kayaking, white water rafting, hiking, biking, and camping.

We also do not forget academics. With a fully accredited school available, students can learn and improve their academic performance through a personalized academic plan that supports their learning and therapeutic process. In addition to core curriculum standards, Solstice offers a fine arts course that doubles as an outlet for expression for the students.

Some unique things about the academic programming at Solstice includes:

  • Smaller class sizes and personalized academic plans that focuses on each student’s need and capacity to grow.
  • Shorter terms and fully transferable credits that allow students to catch up with school while attending the program.
  • Aspects of our academic program go hand-in-hand with the therapeutic program and skills and lessons learned in one area can be applied and used in the other as well.
  • Excellent college counseling and preparedness that allows students to not miss out on opportunities after completing their school courses.

In order to bring about change in our students, our program philosophy is supported by five influential components that we believe in. They are:

  1. People, more than programs, create the more lasting impact.
  2. Intensive family focus helps to address the child’s most important emotional connections family.
  3. Focus on internal change through value development is needed, rather than external compliance.
  4. Holistic approaches that address both physical and emotional needs (mind-body connection) is more effective in solving the issue and not just the symptom.
  5. Female and assigned female at birth specific interventions are necessary to address the unique problems and needs that girls and assigned female at birth have.

The foundation of our program has been built based on these principles and is constantly refined and tuned in order to meet the evolving needs of teen girls. From this, three philosophical pillars emerge to make up the therapeutic culture at Solstice which drive the healing and growth process. The pillars are:

  1. Relationship Based Approach: The process of building and maintaining healthy, trusting relationships with friends, family, and the community around the student.
  2. Principle Driven Foundation: Developing core principles and values that cultivate a desire to identify with, adopt, and nurture desirable qualities such as respect, responsibility, love, family relationships, and personal responsibility.
  3. Experiential Therapy: More effectively learn and heal by €˜doing’ rather than €˜talking’ about doing through activities such as equine therapy, experiential groups, recreation, adventure therapy, and community service.
